Demand For Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) Arrangements Soars
The Daily Telegraph has reported today that Government figures suggest demand for Lasting Power of Attorney applications has doubled in the last two years.
The article highlights concerns that people’s life-and-death wishes are being overlooked due to a backlog in the processing of LPA applications at the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) as a result of the unprecedented levels of people applying.
The impact of the UK’s ageing population along with an increase in dementia diagnoses are cited as the main reasons behind this trend. In 2010 we had 10 million people in the UK over 65 years old and the latest projections show that by 2030 this age bracket will have risen to over 15 million.
It is therefore not surprising that more and more of us are feeling the need to appoint a loved-one to make financial or life-or-death treatment decisions on our behalf in the future as mental capacity begins to fail.
Law firm JMW Solicitors are quoted and according to their calculations they believe the number of people in England and Wales making Lasting Power of Attorney arrangements has risen by almost 90% to over half a million applications since 2013.
