Advances in digital technology are altering the way people work.  A recent survey, based on interviews with 200 HR Directors, by recruitment specialists Robert Half shows that remote working in the UK has increased by 37% in the last three years.  This trend is mirrored worldwide.  For example Forrester predicted that 43% of the US workforce, some 63 million workers, would be working remotely during 2016.

The legal profession is no exception.  Only yesterday top 250 firm Addleshaw Goddard, which has 1000+ employees, announced it had given ‘home-desking’ the green light for its fee earners and business service employees in Leeds, London and Manchester.  This follows a spate of announcements from law firms re their commitment to flexible working in the last 12 months, in their efforts to retain and nurture top legal talent, including Linklaters, DAC Beachcroft and Dentons.

The Robert Half survey highlights the fact that 60% of HR directors believe offering employees flexible working practices results in an increase in productivity. A 2013 ACAS report explains that its findings highlighted that homeworkers tend to work in excess of their contracted hours and that home working has a positive impact on their well-being.

Of course technology is the main enabler for remote working and work-from-home options.  A good legal software partner should be able to offer seamless home-desking and remote working opportunities providing access to all your mission critical software tools.
